Chapter Five: Coming Together as One

It’s been a week since we arrived in Lake City. Things have gone well with the visits. The boys seem to like each other, and Diane has been very accommodating to our needs. As the days pass, we spend more and more time with Brett. Last night he spent the night with us at the hotel, and today we’re letting the boys swim in the outdoor pool. I feel we’re making great progress with Brett.

My phone rings and I’m happy to see it’s Chase. After letting Nichole know he’s on the phone, I walk away from everyone so I can speak in private.

“Hey, Chase.”

“Congratulations, you’re now the proud father of twin sons.”

“The adoption, it’s over.”

“Signed, sealed, and delivered.”

“Thank you, man. I truly appreciate it.” I run my hand over my scruffy beard.

“It’s my pleasure. We’d like to meet him when things get settled.”

“Yeah, we’ll definitely have a small party so we can introduce him to everyone.”

“If you need us for anything, we do have some experience with twins.”

This is good to know. “I’m sure we’ll be calling you for advice. Thank you, again.”

I disconnect the call and smile when I notice Nichole’s still watching me. Her eyes light up so I nod letting her know it’s over. He’s ours. Now we need to let Diane know. I get in the pool and kiss my bride.

“Congratulations, it’s another boy,” I tease.

She smiles, revealing perfectly white teeth. “I know. This is very exciting.” She wraps her arms around my neck and I kiss her again. I hear someone say something about cooties, and I look at the culprit, who’s laughing uncontrollably. Connor’s sitting on the steps of the pool beside his brother, and they are both laughing uncontrollably. I kiss Nichole one last time before I start my water assault on the two three-year-olds. Soon the splashing is out of control and Nichole leaves me to defend myself. Once the splashing is over, she waves her phone at me and walks away. I know she’s going to call Diane. I wonder if this isn’t something that should be done in person. Maybe this is the way Diane wanted it.

Nichole and I are very cautious about what we say in front of the boys, so we’ll wait until they’re in bed tonight before we discuss the phone calls. We still haven’t told Connor that Brett is the boy who’ll be living with us, and we haven’t told Brett that he’ll be coming home to live with us either. This is a very sensitive matter, and we need to proceed with caution. Brett’s been through so much; we don’t want to cause him any more unnecessary stress.

When the boys are asleep Nichole asks, “When Chase called, what all did he say?”

“He said, ‘Congratulations, you’re now the proud parents of twins.’”

Her smile spreads across her face. “He did?”

“He also said if we need help, he has lots of experience with twins.”

“Twins. Two kids. Can you believe it?”
